28th Infantry Division, 110th Regiment, Company K, Re-Enactment Unit
BASIC UNIFORM REQUIREMENTS:
HEADGEAR
- M1 steel helmet of World War II style with correct color chin strap and World War II liner with leather strap in front. Flat red Keystone of approved color and size in front; approved pattern camouflage net of ½ inch in spacing.
- Garrison (overseas) cap, wool, and olive drab with light blue Infantry piping, 110th Regiment crest pin in the correct position.
- Uniform - Shirt, wool, mustard or olive colored, enlisted man's (i.e. no epaulets.) Pre 1945.
- Trousers, field, wool, mustard or olive colored, with enlisted man's open-faced belt buckle and belt, webbed, khaki or olive colored.
- Field jacket, M1938 or M1941.
- Undershirt, olive, crew neck of athletic (tank top.)
- Leggings, canvas, khaki, 8-lug.
- Footwear - U.S. Army issue brown leather ankle-high service shoes, smooth or rough side out. High top two buckle or paratroop types are acceptable, since a pair of leggings covers them. Non-Military types may be worn if pre-approved.
COMBAT EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS:
- Field gear - M1923 cartridge belt, khaki, ten pockets.
- First Aid pouch, khaki, one or two snap.
- Canteen and cup in cover, khaki. Early aluminum or later black plastic caps are both correct.
- Meat can (mess kit) with utensils and meat can pouch, khaki.
- M1936 combat suspenders, with M1936 Musette bag, both khaki.
- Weapons - M1 .30 caliber Garand semiautomatic rifle is the required weapon for the Infantry. It must be equipped with M1907 leather sling or any other khaki web sling.
- M1903 through M1903A3 .30 caliber Springfield rifle is. Again, a sling as described for the Garand is required.
- M1 carbine .30 caliber with proper khaki sling.
- Bayonet M1905 and scabbard M3 (sixteen inch version.) Shorter (ten-inch version) M1 bayonet.
- Browning Automatic Rifle, .30 caliber. Various models dated before war's end, with approved sling. BI-pod is recommended.
- M1928 through M1A1 Thompson .45 caliber submachine gun, with correct sling and twenty round stick magazines. No semiautomatic or long barreled conversions allowed.
- M1911 through M1911A1 Colt .45 caliber semiautomatic pistol with russet colored holster. Non-Comms may also carry this with proper khaki belt.
- Simulator weapons must be approved before they are used.
* NOTE: If weapon other than .30 caliber Springfield or Garand rifle is carried, appropriate khaki belt and cartridge pouches must be carried!
INSIGNIA REQUIREMENTS:
28th Infantry Division shoulder patch must be worn on all shirts, field jackets and overcoats. Red keystone of similar size must be worn on the front of the helmet. If a dress outfit is worn, the 28th Infantry Division patches must be on the service (Class A) or Ike coat. Dress uniform (Class A service coat and matching trousers) will have proper brass insignia and 110th Regiment pins on lapels, all in correct positions. Garrison cap or service cap to be worn with dress uniform; khaki tie is required. Shoes or boots to be clean, and polished if possible. Rank chevrons to be olive drab on blue embroidered type, khaki on black woven type or olive drab felt on blue type. Shoulder patches of previous United States Army units served in may be worn on right shoulder, opposite 28th Infantry Division patch. In 1997 it was decided to where the 83rd Division patch on the right should in honor of Master Sergeant Jules Desgain (ret) our very own World War II veteran of this re-enactment unit.
GROOMING REQUIREMENTS:
- Hair length - Not to touch the ears or shirt collar, with hair in back and sides to be tapered; in other words no modern style cuts. Crew cuts are, of course, ideal.
- Mustaches - Not recommended but allowed. They are to extend no further than the corners of the lips nor down over the upper lip. ABSOLUTELY no beards are permitted on the portraying United States Army personnel
- Similar requirements apply to women when portraying a male soldier. When portraying a WAC you must meet the requirements of the WAC of World War II.
- Eyeglasses - Correct 1940's style frames are expected. Check with existing members for approved sources.
Despite the rigors of combat, World War II photos show men with short (by today's standards) hair, and many tried to be clean-.
AWARDS and DECORATIONS:
Individuals participating in one combat reenactment or living history as a 28th Infantry Division, 110th Regiment member are eligible to wear the Combat Infantry Badge, with wreath, on their uniform. Ribbons for dress uniform are as follows:
1) American Defense Service Medal.
2) American Campaign Medal.
3) European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal.
4) Ribbons of Valor may ONLY be worn if earned while serving in the Military.
They MUST BE World War II Ribbons.
OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT:
Most of the following items are not required for events, combat or otherwise. However, they are useful items for a better portrayal of a soldier. For adverse weather or field conditions they are advantageous.
- Shelter halves, canvas, light olive or khaki shades, with folding or segmented poles, and tent pegs. Originally carried by two men, is would be sensible for each individual to acquire a complete set. Only metalloid buttons (not snap) types correct.
- United States Army issue sleeping bag, wool, olive colored. If other sleeping bag is used it must be hidden under a proper wool blanket.
- Overcoat, enlisted man's, wool, olive colored, double breasted, with brass buttons.
- Duffel bag, cotton, olive or khaki colored. Very practical for carrying personal gear and quite correct for the times.
- Cap, wool, knit, M1941, olive color (jeep cap.)
- Gloves or scarf, wool, olive colored.
- Sweater or vest, wool, olive colored, or World War II pattern. Sweater must have correct five buttons (same type as shirt.)
- Overshoes, rubber, black, five buckle, of approved pattern, or other Arctic snow-pack approved type.
NOTE: While herringbone twill items were worn in France, they are considered nonstandard and cannot be mixed with above stated wool items.
NOTE: Any reproduction clothing or equipment that meets the above mentioned specifications may be used in place of originals.
